Mount Ida Residence

Project Type

Residential Architectural Design

April 2023

Where Industrial meets Lux, this home's form is a nod to the Roche Moutonnée mountain forms left in the area from the glaciers after their retreat, like nearby Mt Iron which
can be seen from multi-spaces in the home.

The mountain forms are generally the hardiest of materials the glacier cannot erode. Materials used in this project where reminiscent of that. Exposed concrete floors, steel structural columns and beams, combine with schist stone cladding and sheet steel features. All strong robust materials providing a sense of strength and attachment to the landscape. Softer furnishings and timber features add a sense of warmth and snugness to the spaces where you can sit back and take in the famous Wanaka views.

This sensational build is a Wanaka home to be coveted. Clad in exquisite natural schist and featuring an elegant mono-pitched roof, this large 347sqm residence is designed to maximise views and privacy in equal measure.

Seamless flow was crucial to the owners and their young family. The kitchen truly is the heart of this home and where a huge number of the design features meet. The natural textures of marble bench tops and dark hues of the wooden cabinetry, contrast with the industrial steel columns.

One of three living areas with it's Schist clad fireplace, leads you through sliding doors to the thoughtfully designed outdoor entertaining area. Our favourite features? The outdoor fireplace and of course... the swimming pool.
